We headed off in the morning to Luxembourg a fairytale land of rolling pastures, quaint villages and elaborate castles.
First we attempted to drive to Eltz castle which according to another person's blog (on Pinterest) was to be found in Eltz, Luxembourg. While logically you would believe Eltz castle to be in Eltz, as much as you believe in fairytales this does not make them true. This village turned out to be just a quiet little town with cows and construction. The castle was in a distant land called Deutschland.
We resumed our search for a castle and on perusing a more official list of castles decided on Vianden castle. This one in its namesake town sat on top of a mountain overlooking the village. A quick park down the road (free before you enter town), a slight hike up the hill, and a seven euro per person fee and you are inside.
After wandering the castle for a bit, we walked into town where the menu of the day consisting of schnitzel or goulash and entered a quiet bakery on the other side of the street where we acquired a framboise tart (raspberry).
We then drove to and through Luxembourg City where the contrast of modern and new sits in an old walled city over two river ravines (Gorgeous with a very small old town.) We went in search of the location of the iconic picture site of this town but to no avail. Maybe if you wish upon a star you might find it.
When we told others we were going to Luxembourg we asked advice on what to do and see, but while everyone told us we should go no one could tell us of any particular places. Now I see why, the countryside is magnificent and definitely worth a drive.
Transport: In my opinion driving is the only way to go here. While there probably are trains and I saw there were bus tours, to miss the opportunity to stop at what ever castle you wish is a shame.
Language: German and French but still a few spoke English.
Money: Euro
